Unforgiven (A movie review)

Uuforgiven is a western made in 1992 by Clint Eastwood. It stars Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman in the important roles. There are some women in the movie that I recognised but I don't know their names. The movie won 2 Oscars in 1992 for Best Movie and also Best Supporting Actor for Gene Hackman, along with a number of other awards mainly for Best Movie and Best Supporting Actor. There are a number of things I loved about the movie and it made me really interested in western movies and Clint Eastwood.

The Plot
The story is simple. A whore gets her face slashed by a cowboy who she laughs at because he has a small dick. The owner stops the man but the local sheriff or deputy or cop (Gene Hackman) doesn't do anything more than demand that the cowboy pay the owner of the whorehouse a couple of horses. Her friends at the brothel feel that it isn't fair and they offer a bounty to anyone who kills the cowboy. An old gunslinger, William Munny (Clint Eastwood), who now just works on the farm with his 2 kids is approached by someone who tells him about the bounty. Munny used to be a ruthless killer and is well known. He initially rejects the offer but is tempted by the money, so he approaches his friend in crime (Morgan Freeman) and they set out to visit the whores to get details. But standing in their way of the bounty is Gene Hackman.

Cast and Characters
Gene Hackman's role is really complex and cool and when you watch the movie you'll understand why he won the Oscar. His role is neither the villain nor the hero. At first you'll be thinking that he plays a bad guy but he doesn't. His characterisation of the role cannot exactly be titled 'bad'. It's just indifferent. He thought the payment would suffice for what the cowboy did. He wasn't doing it for his own benefit. But he does make an example of an Englishman who comes to take up the offer on the bounty set by the whores by beating him up and jailing him. But you can understand where he's coming from. The character would feel insulted that people are resorting to unlawful acts by defying his law.

Clint Eastwood gives his usual anti-hero performance which is really good and expected of him. I mean he's the real anti-hero and to play that role for him should be like everyday behaviour. Come on, the guy played Dirty Harry in 5 movies, as the Man with no name in trilogy of Mexican western movies including The Good, The Bad and the Ugly... Clint Eastwood is nothing short of a legend - especially in westerns.

Morgan Freeman does his usual job of being the outstanding supporting actor. Morgan Freeman is the ultimate supporting actor just like how Clint Eastwood is the ultimate anti-hero.

Recommended?
You should definitely watch this movie. I highly recommend it. It's not like most westerns with a lot of senseless violence. The movie has such depth and character, it's amazing to watch. It's very very realistic. You watch the movie and you'll be immersed into it.
